Reaching unvaccinated children in Solomon Islands

We're working with the Solomon Islands government and Gavi Equity Accelerator Fund to vaccinate children against disease.  

Unvaccinated or 'zero dose’ children are vulnerable to disease. They're at risk of diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough, which can cause serious illness. But a routine series of vaccines can protect them.   

To improve vaccine uptake, we’re partnering with local health workers. We've made progress since 2022, but there's still work to do. We aim to increase vaccination coverage for zero-dose children by 25%. Together with our local partners, we've have identified key barriers to vaccination. We are now implementing a number of strategies in response. Those strategies include:  

• local training for health workers  
• support with ‘microplanning’ short-term strategies  
• a library of images that depict barriers of vaccination  
• online training videos about immunisation  
• improved internet connection at some rural health facilities  
• a pilot program that helps local women leaders talk about vaccination  
• baby blankets printed with information about vaccines 
• advocacy support for local stakeholders.

Our project commenced May 2023 and runs until December 2025.
