Living guidelines in maternal and perinatal health

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research maintains a portfolio of over 400 recommendations related to the care of pregnant, childbearing and postpartum women and newborns globally.

Objective

Burnet Institute researchers are leading knowledge synthesis and guideline development activities in high-priority health topics, such as prevention and treatment of postpartum haemorrhage, peripartum infections, preterm birth and others. We help ensure WHO’s guidelines are evidence-based and up-to-date.

Approach

We conduct high-quality systematic reviews of available evidence on effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, acceptability and feasibility. The evidence we assemble is used by WHO and expert panels to produce evidence-based recommendations global use.

Community impact

Our research provides evidence-based guidelines for clinicians and policymakers to provide the best level of care to women before, during and after childbirth. The impact of our work is truly global, as WHO's recommendations are for use in high-, middle- and low-income countries internationally.
