ANCP: Prevention and care for drug-resistant tuberculosis in Myanmar

Past project

This project aims to implement and evaluate a model of community-based drug-resistant tuberculosis care to facilitate scale-up in Myanmar and other similar resource-constrained settings.

Objective

Key objectives are to:

  • build the capacity of township health system in delivering and co-ordinating MDR-TB prevention and care
  • deliver quality community-based MDR-TB prevention and care services through community-based treatment supporters
  • improve community and health facility-based TB/MDR-TB infection control, TB preventative activities and education
  • measure the impact, effectiveness and feasibility of the model of care through monitoring and evaluation and operational research.

Timeline

July 2014–June 2018.

Approach

The project, supported by the Australian NGO Cooperation Agreement Program, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (ANCP-DFAT) is:

  • providing all 60 existing multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) patients with treatment support for at least nine months of the first year
  • reducing the burden on the health system and enabling treatment and care for more MDR-TB patients diagnosed but not currently enrolled.
